The American Councils is looking for interested families to facilitate and host foreign exchange students in the U.S. for the 2006-07 school year. These students have undergone a competitive process to earn the right to represent their countries in these programs. Each student speaks English and is eager to learn about American Culture. These one-year scholarship-based programs funded by the US State Department to encourage learning and understanding between Americans and people from Eurasia, include a monthly stipend, incidental funds and medical insurance.
  • Future Leaders Exchange Program (FLEX) for students from Russia and Eurasia
  • Youth Exchange and Study Program (YES) for students from Afghanistan
  • American Serbia and Montenegro Leadership Exchange (A-SMYLE)
We are looking for English-speaking FAMILIES willing to host who are able to provide students with a loving and supportive environment, a place to sleep (sharing a room is okay), meals and snacks, and a quiet place to study. All types of families are welcomed including those with teenagers or younger children in the home, retirees, "empty nesters," and single parent families.

Gina Greco received an Internationalization Mini-Grant to develop ties between students at PSU and students at the University of Ouagadougou. She has implemented email exchanges in two classes, and her French 303 class is creating a dvd about Portland State which will be screened for the students of the University of Ouagadougou.

Graduate Student Dawn Stanfield (MA Spanish) has received a Fulbright Scholarship for teaching and research in Spain. She will be researching the juvenile literature of Ana María Matute.

DeLys Ostlund, Foreign Languages and Literatures faculty, was recently appointed associate dean of Graduate Studies. Dr. Ostlund will remain on faculty in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures in the Spanish division. For the past two year, she was chair of the University's Graduate Council."

Inger M. Olsen, FLL, participated in and presented a paper at the annual SASS (Society
for the Advancement of Scandinavian Study) conference hosted by the University of Alaska
Fairbanks, at Fairbanks, Ak. March 13-15, 2008. The title of the paper was, "Mâliârâq
Vebæk: Katrine's Mother and Smilla's Aunt?"

celebrated Iraqi poetess Nazik al-Mala'ikah and published in /Oregon Literary Review/,
Vol. 3, No. 1, Winter/Spring, 2008.

Gina Greco and Christine Rose (English) co-authored an annotated translation of Le Ménagier de Paris which will be published by Cornell University Press (expected Fall 2008). This 14th-century conduct book provided a young medieval woman with all the information that she needed to fulfill her role as wife and household manager, including a moral treatise, gardening instructions, hawking manual and cookbook. Contemporary readers learn not only about daily life in a late-medieval bourgeois home, but also male desire (and related anxieties) to proscribe and control female activity and desire.

Congratulation to Dr. Patricia Wetzel who has been awarded a contract to oversee a project to translate forms and documents into Chinese, Laotian, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Somali and Vietnamese for Portland Fire and Rescue. The work will assist Portland’s immigrant community in
understanding the requirements and regulations that apply in procuring permits for
decorations, candles, cooking devices and the like in a variety of circumstances
(including public buildings, facilities, and special events). The contract is part of an
initiative in Foreign Languages to create a credential in Translation and Interpretation.
Classes have already begun in Translation Theory, Japanese Interpretation, Russian
Translation, and Spanish Translation.

Portland Public Schools received notification from Senator Wyden's Office late last week of a successful grant application to launch a Russian Language and Culture Program. The U.S. Department of Education approved the district’s $800,000 proposal, which will span three years and involve approximately 400 students. The district will work with the Portland State University Russian Department and the Slavic Coalition of Oregon to establish a four-track framework that will allow students to pursue Russian language and culture studies according to their interests and proficiency levels. From kindergarten through 12th grade, students will study academic content in Russian, integrated with language instruction. Real-life experiential learning via internships, service learning and study-abroad opportunities will enhance the curriculum. Still to be determined over the next few months are the elementary, middle and high schools at which the program will be sited, along with other specifics. Project co-directors are Mary Bastiani and Michael Bacon.
